We have improved the Course Setting Layer in the OCAD App to make the app even more appealing to course setters, controllers and control setters.
What’s new?
- Show information about courses and controls. Display one or multiple courses or show control details like the description or assigned courses. This is helpful if you need to make sketches and notes directly in the terrain regarding changes to the control placement, the control description, or even the map itself.
- Show legs in/out to see which courses will have to punch a specific control and from which direction the runners will arrive and in which the will leave. A useful feature when it comes to the questions on which site of the object to place the control.
- Auto-Select tool, that selects the control that is nearest to the center of the screen. Ideal to use in combination with GPS and the auto-center tool, to automatically select the control that is nearest to your current position.
How to display the Course Setting Layer?
Open the Right-hand Panel on the top right and go to the Course Setting tab.
Note that the Course Setting panel is only available for course setting projects. When you start the OCAD App, you will see whether a project is labeled as Map or Course Setting project.
Tip: Click the + button in the top right to download a Course Setting Sample Project and test the new features.
How the Course Setting Layer can be used

Course setters and Controllers can display information about controls and courses directly in the terrain. This is really useful if you are checking control sites and need to make sketches and notes directly in the terrain regarding changes to the control placement, the control description, or even the map itself – always supported by the GPS position of your mobile device.
Control setters also benefit from the GPS position of the OCAD App to mark control sites or putting out controls. While having a pile of controls in your hand, it’s probably more convenient to use a paper map. But a phone in your pocket that gives you the possibility to display the GPS position can serve as a valuable backup, whether you have found the right hilltop.
Limitations of the Course Setting Layer
It is not possible to edit courses or course objects in the app. However, you can make sketches and notes directly in the terrain regarding changes to the control placement, the control description, or even the map itself.
Use the OCAD App Data Exchange to import the sketches and notes from the field work in OCAD Desktop and adjust courses and controls there.
